Part 2: 

    As the vaporized carbon enters the acceleration voltage, the positively carbon is pushed by the electric field between the plates. each molecule is then accelerated  towards the negative end (vaporized carbon has been striped of it's electrons so it's positively charged).  Instead of treating this as a kinematics problem, it's easier to think of it an energy problem.

    Each particle has an energy of equal to the charge of the particle times the voltage.  (qV = E).  Using this method makes it simpler to solve for the maximum velocity. 

 


Part 3: 

       Velocity selector, using both a strong magnetic and electrical fields.  The forces from the fields are balanced for only a specific velocity.
